For many of us who experience severe depression, it can be described as an all consuming mental illness with physical effects on the body. It can be triggered by events, or, as in my case, it can can begin for no apparent reason at all.

Whilst the symptoms of depression vary from person to person I feel it may be helpful to share the wide array from which I suffer, so that people can hopefully understand that clinical depression is more than feeling blue from time to time.

Some of the symptoms I suffer with are as follows;

  • A persistent low mood
  • Loss of energy
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Lack of ability to enjoy things I used to love
  • Lack of motivation
  • Poor short term memory
  • Poor concentration levels
  • Excessive feelings of guilt and anxiety


Some of us experience depression so severely that our lives are changed significantly. When the depression lifts we know we will never be the same person again; it will always leave a scar.

Fighting depression is a constant battle but there is hope. Even if you can’t see it now. Many of us, including myself have been through the depths of depression more than once, and though our experiences have changed us, we continue to fight the black dog that is depression.

I am curious as to whether there are other individuals who are waging the same war, experiencing similar symptoms. As you know this is a lonely illness, and any comments would be greatly appreciated.
